Retroviruses

MMG813: Retroviruses

Retroviruses (Retroviridae) is a family of viruses characterized by a lifecycle that goes against the central dogma of molecular biology, i.e. that information flows from DNA to RNA to protein. Retroviruses possess a positive single-stranded RNA genome that is converted by the viral reverse transcriptase into DNA and then inserted by the viral integrase into the host cell genome.

HIV/AIDS

Human immunodeficiency virus is a member of lentivirus family of retroviruses.

Oncoretroviruses

Oncoretroviruses contain 3-4 genes encoding gag (group specific antigen), pol (polymerase), and env (envelope). An exception is Rous Sarcoma Virus that in addition contains the src oncogene.
